Euphemism of the week….(The Sanity Inspector)

From CNET News:

A little more than a week after the release of Apple’s iPhone 3G, an unofficial development team has announced the release of software that “jailbreaks” the new device, allowing unauthorized third-party applications to be loaded.

That’s as rich as saying “extra-legal customs levies” instead of “baksheesh”.

Why shouldn’t I be allowed to put any software I want on the damned thing? I paid for it, right?

On a related note.. anyone know of software that will allow me to download songs FROM my iPod to computer? My computer HD crashed and I lost all my iTunes.. Apple of course keeps a record that I purchased them but wont let me redownload them (unless I repurchase them).. Any idea how I can get them from my iPod device to computer?

Doesn’t syncing the iPod get them back? It should.

    1) Upload.

    2) Sync doesn’t work like that. Don’t.

    3) An iPod is just a hard drive (in a faggy box) with a concealed directory structure. Your files are all sitting there on it, laughing at you. An unofficial development team has surely made an application that will reveal them. Find the one for your operating system and copy the files to where(ver) you want them.

    Or, on OS X: cp -R /Volumes/[name of your iPod]/iPod_Control ~

(If that’s nonsense to you, don’t type it anywhere.)

    “I paid for it, right?”

    - That sentiment has never carried any weight with either Apple or Microsoft. The way they look at all their products the customer is merely renting the use of them.

    - I’m not sure, but I think that means the several million copies of DOS1.1 stored in dust covered boxes could probably be confiscated for exceeding the 25 year term limits.

    - Trust me, if that asshole Gates thought he could make money at it, he’d give it a shot.

Ouroboros, in windows, with hidden files viewable, you will see a folder at the root level of the ipod called “iPod_Control”. In that folder is a folder called “music”. In there are a bunch of folders with your music in them. There’s also a free tool that will do it for you if you don’t follow what I’ve suggested. I feel odd about providing a link, so y’know, google “ephpod”.

Won’t work with the Touch or iPhone though. Those don’t mount as a disk drive.

I’m just about certain that sync transferred my purchased music from my home Mac to my notebook (I had to authorize that computer with Apple), but perhaps it’s best not to try it, given psycho’s warning.

BBH, you an old school programmer? Many of the old school guys I know hate Gates for monetizing software. ‘Course sometimes I imagine that if those guys ran the world it would be a cold, artless, dehumanizing but very functional and elegantly coded place.

    “elegantly coded”

From the people who gave us Vista??????

Ouroboros, in case you’ve never heard this advice, listen:

Get an external hard drive! Many are less than $100 and will backup everything you want.

I just dislike him for dominating the market with substandard products. Of course, maybe my standards are just a bit too high.

Really, really scary for me to think that Windows is actually flying in a combat aircraft.

Calling people “Idiots” is no longer politically correct, either. You should use the term, “Intellectual majority representative”.

I remember back in ‘94 or so, still in the USENET days, getting a harangue from some engineer-type who liked to berate newbies for using any Windows product. Especially involved in this was the use of the mouse, which apparently was some kind of evil. I dredged further, and the guy said that in using Windows you aren’t really controlling what your computer does, as it sets up a middleman between you and the program or some such. He had a point, but the thing I took away from this exchange was the fact that people who had no fucking clue how a computer worked were using them, because of Windows. Instead of spending time mastering DOS et. al, we were just point-and-clicking to open up word files and send emails and you know, do the things we wanted a computer for.

Like I said, he had a point, but Gates had a better one. ‘Course, his software blows, which is why I bought a Mac last year. I was even able to redownload my purchased iTunes without any bother.

Although I probably should buy an external hard drive.

Running Vista x64 with 8gb ram and Intel quad-core. I use it mostly for interface design work, print design and occasional video projects, so I’m often running the adobe stuff and sometimes avid, all of which are memory and processor intensive. Not to mention maya, which is a hog. I’ve got a bunch of web dev services running as well (PHP, ColdFusion, etc). Also, full install of Cubase and tons of VST plugins. I’ve also been known to play some half-life 2 and such.

Current uptime: 2 weeks. So, YMMV with the ubiquitous claims of windows’ instability.

I just love computers and computing. Give me an old NeXT or SGI machine and I’m like a kid in a candy store. Inasmuch as MS/Gates have been one of the paramount forces in the ascension of computing, I’m eager to support the value they offer when and where they succeed in offering it. Have they put out some terrible products? Sure. But so have Sun, Apple, et al.

    Ouroboros:

There are a few software apps out there designed for your situation– some free, some not. IPod Access is the program that I used last month after a HDD meltdown. Just DISABLE AUTOMATIC SYNCH on your itunes first (or your iPod might try to synch to an the now-empty iTunes folder on your HDD — and POOF, all your songs are erased from your iPod — although there are settings that SHOULD prevent such a massive iPod erasure, if you’ve set them the correct way), then run iPod Access. In a few clicks, it will load all your songs from your iPod (including metadata) back into a Music/iTunes folder that it sets up on your HDD. To reload your playlists, you have to take an extra step and make a few more clicks.

Good luck. I just lost about 40G worth of tunes last month after my crash, and it really sucks trying to get them back.

  24. Comment by Ouroboros on 7/21 @ 4:18 pm #

It never dawned on me that losing my iTunes might cause my iPod to get erased.. I plugged it up and it synched and though my iTunes is empty my iPod isnt.. So thats good.. I’ll try one of those software solutions tonight and see if I can reload my iTunes.
