Journalism standards update [Karl]

Fox News Channel production assistant Jennifer Locke was fired this morning after being heard on video telling John McCain she voted for him.

MSNBC host Chris Matthews remains employed after talking about how Barack Obama has put thrills and chills in his leg since 2004.

Female journos (whose identities are likely well-known in the biz) heard on video openly ogling Obama’s crotch on his campaign plane?  Presumably still employed.

(h/t HotAir headlines.)

Update: Allah-lanche!

um, Karl, I don’t really consider Matthews a journalist.

    FoxNews is obviously sexist.

    maggie,

I know you were snarking, but is a production assistant a journalist?

  4. Comment by maggie katzen on 5/9 @ 3:52 pm #

er, it’s a tougher call Karl. I did briefly think about that, I guess it depends on what you think a production assistant does. I was thinking they do a lot of the legwork don’t they? what was Mary Mapes?

Journalism standards update: There are none.

Mapes was a producer. Much more responsibility than a PA.

Keeps the camera operator from tripping, would be my guess. Sort of a glorified guide dog.

well, sure, Pablo, but isn’t it just a matter of position in the “chain of command”? she was after all, out with a camera crew to cover an event.

whatevs, I’m a bit wired today. should probably just go watch some tv.

I think firing her was pretty stupid and kind of cruel. Part of what they tell you when you take a stupid PA job is it’s ok that we’re gonna pay you for shit cause you’re gonna learn so much. Well they lied, really. Mostly all she learned is that she worked for a bunch of dickheads.

Yeah, but she was fetching lattes and extension cords, where Mapes grabbed the mechanical bull by the horns and rode it right up Dan Rather’s ass.

Karl, keep your eyes from clinging to Obama’s weenie lines.

So, why do we care about this? Call Rupert Murdoch and tell him he is a cunt. Wait, give me his number, I will do it.

I thought it was more Ailes to call. I haven’t been keeping up over there since he got promoted though. Still, sad to hear that Fox is behaving like that. They used to be different.

    “…what was Mary Mapes?”

    Hi, Maggie.

Mary Mapes was a stupid twatwaffle.

If you fired every reporter who fawned over a leftist politician, you’d have janitors reporting the news tomorrow night.

    Can you say Grotesque Double-Standard?

And this was a PA, for Christ’s sake, not even a reporter.

People have this bizarre idea that Fox is “conservative” when they’re just not as far left as the other networks.

  17. Comment by happyfeet on 5/10 @ 11:58 am #

At the least it’s safe to say that Fox is acting sort of wildly defensive. There’s a crisis of confidence in there somewhere.

yeah. I actually think it’s kinda silly to expect that media people won’t vote. and I wonder if there isn’t more to this story. people are touchy about firings. because of the lawyers.

  19. Comment by happyfeet on 5/10 @ 12:40 pm #

That’s true. But a Fox News insider called it “journalistically unacceptable” is what the link says. You’d think if they were thinking about a suit they’d not want to put that spin on it. Cause that’s really really stupid. But then she’d been there for two years and was still a PA. That’s no really stellar bright either.

  20. Comment by happyfeet on 5/10 @ 12:41 pm #

    *not* really

  21. Comment by maggie katzen on 5/10 @ 12:45 pm #

yeah, haps, and I was wondering if maybe it had more to do with her apparently continuing to try to talk to McCain. and there may be still more to the story, but only the really public gaffe is what’s being commented on.

  22. Comment by happyfeet on 5/10 @ 12:48 pm #

You’re right that there’s a lot of judgment that need to be reserved. But really it’s probably best if we never know the whole deal.

  23. Comment by happyfeet on 5/10 @ 12:49 pm #

As an outed McCain voter she’s already gonna face a tough road in the media business.

  24. Comment by McGehee on 5/10 @ 2:01 pm #

I dunno, Happy — she’s better off outed as a McCain voter than a Bush voter. If she has to be outed as voting for any Republican at all, McCain is as good as it gets with the media types.
