“Joseph Ratzinger’s claims about the Hitler Youth are not true. Compulsory membership was first defined in 1936 and reinforced in 1939, not in 1941 as he says. Ratzinger also says that he was “still too young†at the time, but he was 14 in 1941 and not too young at all: between the ages of 10 and 14, membership in the Deutsche Jungvolk (a group for younger children) was mandatory. Yet there is no mention of Raztinger belonging. If he had managed to avoid the required membership in the Deutsche Jungvolk, why did he suddenly join the Hitler Youth in 1941?
Resistance: Both Joseph Ratzinger and his brother, Georg, have said that “resistance was impossible†at the time and, therefore, it’s not surprising or morally culpable that they also “went along.†This is also not true. First, it’s insulting to the many who risked their lives to resist the Nazi regime, both in organized cells and on an individual basis. Second, there are many examples of those who refused service in the Hitler Youth for a variety of reasons. ”

Funny how when it is someone who has views similar to our own saying somewhat over-the-line shit, we say “hey they are edgy, but just telling it like it is”….but when it is someone from the OTHER side of the aisle talking trash, they are hatefilled scum. My knee jerk reaction to Darleen’s post was “he’s a comedian, get over yourself”. But I thought about all of my fellow liberals who are devoted to hanging on Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, et al’s every word, waiting to be deeply outraged and scream “unfunny, mean-spirited hacks!!”
I think we are just a bunch of touchy freaks in this country. When I was in London, I was surprised at how they raked their politicians and religious leaders over the coals regularly. No one was “off-limits”(except for Muslims, who get a free pass due to their propensity for heading for the explosives cabinet rather than the fainting couch when they are offended).

Aw, effit. Bullshit, guys.
The outstanding feature here is that semanticleo is a member in good standing of the group that has established, as a firm principle, that any examination of Teh Candidate’s antecedents, including prior associations, previously-voiced opinions, etc., that arrives at any negative conclusions is and can only be a “smear” emanating from “the noise machine”. Having had that principle applied to them, they are horrified, and are trying hard to establish that that is true only for communicants of their own highly-restricted and vastly intolerant faith.
So, for instance, if I note that of the strictly limited number of people entitled to call themselves “Swift Boat vets”, eight out of ten are willing to go on record as saying that John Kerry is an asshole and one refuses to voice an opinion, that is a “smear”. Similarly, if I observe that Barack Obama is a known intimate of some people who are clearly sleazy if not out-and-out corrupt, it can only be “smearing”. However, bringing up a sixty year old incident in which the young Ratzinger was compelled to join an organization which he left as soon as possible and whose teachings he has clearly and repeatedly repudiated constitutes a “fair examination of the past”; and since one person who was not there, was not involved, has no personal knowledge of the situation, and has offered hostility before is willing to assert that the emanations of the penumbras of the circumstantial evidence available indicate that a fourteen-year-old did not sling armed adults’ assertion in their faces, His Holiness must of necessity be condemned as an unrepentant Nazi. This, we are assured, is “evenhanded” and “fair”, as contrasted to “smearing.”
Regards,
Ric

‘Cleo’s gurglings don’t even begin to make sense. If Ratzi was so eager to be a Hitler Youth, why did he put it off for four years after he was required to join and why did he bolt for the door as soon as the opportunity present itself?
Here’s an alternate narrative, ‘cleo: Ratzinger managed to avoid membership from age 10 to 14, when the Nazi state got around to compelling him to join. Then, when an opening presented itself, he absented himself from the organization.
Doesn’t this fit the facts a trifle better than your blinkered interpretation?
Comment by Smirky McChimp on 4/16 @ 10:41 am #
Ric wins.
As to Maher, isn’t he the chap who (winkingly, natch) suggested that the safest way to end conflict with Islam was to make a mass, insincere conversion to it?
It’s nothing short of laughable to hear these supposed “equal-opportunity offenders” who claim to denounce bigotry while dismissing one of the great sources of human thought and culture with facile waves of the hand. It’s fully as stupid to say that religion is the enemy as it is to say that foreigners are the enemy. Both constitute reflexive, unthinking judgements about things with which we are unfamiliar – which I believe they call bigotry.

It’s funny. The article Cleo quoted from actually has a much more balanced conclusion than one would think given what he was trying to make of it.
There is absolutely no reason to think that Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, is now or has ever been secretly a Nazi. Nothing he has ever said or done even remotely suggests the slightest sympathy with any of the basic Nazi ideas or goals. Any claim that he is a Nazi is implausible at best.
He goes on to say that the pope might be faulted for not throwing himself under the Nazi war machine, but I guess the same could have been said about Peter with regard to the Romans. As an atheist myself, I just don’t see the point of this line of criticism. To expect a 14 yr old to carry such a moral burden is the sort of attitude I would expect from the Church in its heretic-burning heyday, but not from someone with pretensions to enlightenment. And if the 14 yr old was not responsible, then the 81 yr old isn’t either.

Maher probably has advanced stage siphyllis (sp). Spending much time in the grotto of the Playboy Mansion pool has its pitfalls.
Besides that, having a former standup comic play political commentator just shows the seriousness that the network hosting him/her is about presenting a political discussion. Witness CNN bringing Louis Black in on a election roundtable. Here’s a guy (who has some funny stuff at times) whose real claim to fame is incoporating vile BDS in his routine along with the “considerable” talent of saying “fuck” like he has torrets syndrome. He’s an authority on politics now? He and John Stewart can discuss the finer points of public policy and make a legitimate point to an intelligent viewer? Or just say fuck Cheney enough times to make the stupid roll over in titters.
CNN, E! Entertainment, MSNBC and FOX – the line between news and Britneytainment is nigh. The rest of us go back to reading, like it was done in the Guttenberg days.

God, I didn’t know that people were still trying to trot out that Nazi youth thing. That is so shitty. We feel sorry for kids conscripted unwillingly into wretched wars in Sudan and Rwanda. But the Pope gets herded into the brownshirts as a kid, and he is an asshole Nazi for life? Please don’t be ridiculous. I have no issue with people objecting to religious organizations. But this is foolish. Of all of the religions, I respect Catholics for their consistency. They are prolife: Which means they object to abortion, gratuitous warmongering, and the death penalty. That is an unassailable position, in my opinion. More often than not, they are on OUR side – they really, really believe that combating poverty and oppression is MORE important than their other pet peeves about sexuality and family planning (though their limitations on birth control and family planning are not helpful at all to combating poverty, in my opinion).
I just don’t get it the pope-hate. I mean, none of the monotheistic religions are exactly hotbeds of feminist forward thinking and social liberalism, but Catholics come way closer to my worldview than any other major religion (unitarians don’t count, and they are not huge enough to be very influential the way Catholics are).

He’s also nowhere near as funny as he thinks he is. His wordplay is all right, but as far as delivery and timing goes, he’s only mediocre (especially when compared to someone like Jon Stewart, for whom delivery and timing are the entire enchilada, most of what he has to say being hardly relevatory).

They are prolife: Which means they object to abortion, gratuitous warmongering, and the death penalty. That is an unassailable position, in my opinion.
Unless you believe in a woman’s right to her body, and the right to self-defense. I guess that makes me pro-death.
Heh. I had a lady call me one night and start into a spiel about how she was calling on behalf of some pro-life organization. I cut her off. I said, “I’m pro-death… definitely pro-death.” Click. She hung up.

Lisa, I have to agree, Dennis Miller is not funny on regular TV. His whole game is mixing a postgraduate education with a merry sprinkling of expletives. Within a show designed to fit that, it works, and his HBO series was actually a hoot (Dennis, I think, in fact, you DO want to go off on a rant here).
But he’s not the man for news-talk, any more than he’s the man for Monday Night Football (due to recent NFL regulations that require you to be dumber than Forrest Gump after four shots of tequila to be hired as a sportscaster). His show was tepid and un-remarkable.

Nope, just juvenile enough to pick the one issue out of those listed and yammer about it, because it has particular emotional resonance to you, and ignore the entire thrust of the aforementioned point, which was that the Catholic positions on a host of issues are consistent and bound by principle.
Glad I could clear that up for you.

I used to think that no one could be more obnoxious than the average hardshell Southern Baptist (such as my father) on a “witnessing” tear. But that is no longer the case.
Clearly the most obnoxious ones are atheists, especially those of the leftwingnut variety (and most do seem to lean that way), who are bound and determined to impose their viewpoint on all and sundry.
One of the things that makes them so hard to take is their propensity to gratuitously lie about those e-vil Xtians, and by so doing demonstrate just how weak their case actually is.
Sigh.

Cave Bear – Well, if you REALLY want to know PRECISELY what Catholics profess, you should page through the Catechism. Essentially, it is everything you need to know about where us EVIL oppressionistas stand on everything. It is, alas, what we believe, what we have believed for the last 2,000 years, and what we will continue to profess until the end of time.
I only mention it to let everyone know that in fact the Church is NOT opposed to the Death Penalty per se. Nor is it absolutely opposed to war in all cases, though stringent the qualification of a Just War might be.
Additionally, if we could lay to rest the tired INTERPRETATION of our doctrine of “Papal Infallibility” that would also be helpful.
I don’t care if people hate me for what I believe… I just ask they understand what they hate before they hate it.

Al – “anit-Papist” is what I wrote. What I mean is any “Chistian” church that defines itself in terms of what it DOES NOT have in common with the RCC. And there are many, many to choose from.
As for Lutherans, at least the MO Synod ones… most of their pastors adhere to moderate views on the RCC. Not to say the theological stances are not vastly distinct in some very fundamental ways. But they don’t tear others down to build themselves up. So, no… I wouldn’t expect virulent anti-Papist bigotry from their ranks. To the contrary, I find fellowship with them mostly.

She said it was “unassailable” and that was the point to which I was responding. A position can be internally consistent, but that doesn’t make it admirable if the principles are not grounded in reality. There’s an internal logic to the radical Muslim position also, but that doesn’t make it unassailable.
Can I assume that you are pro-life, anti-war, and anti-death penalty, since you’re defending her statement that that is an unassailable position?
Glad I could clear that up for you.

We aren’t trying to impose our viewpoint on anyone, just defending our right not to be imposed on in turn. If you see me here arguing theology, it’s because I like to debate. I think what you are missing here is the raw, smarmy arrogance of a screaming, egotistical elitist. Bill Maher is nothing more than an eighth grade exhibitionist with a totally unbalanced TV show.
Bill Maher says nothing that a lot of my friends don’t say, but his fucking ATTITUDE makes me puke. He is just so much SMARTER than anyone else, nes’t pas? Ah, Enoch root, supporting flip-flopper John McCain has prepared you not to notice changes in Catholic doctrine over the last 2000 years. How’s transubstantiation working for you? How about priests marrying? Mass in Latin? Usury laws? Indulgences?
No changes in 2000 years! We will believe it all until the end of time! Ignore please that we once believed creation happened in six days, the sun revolved around the Earth, and the word of God is literal (thank you to Aquinas for helping us out of that mess!). Now, we’re fine with Darwin (as long as God is still is a part: http://www.catholic.net/RCC/Issues/Pope-and-Evolution/pope-and-evolution.html)
and we apologized to Copernicus and Galileo, and that word of God sure is “inspirational”.
But, we haven’t changed in 2000 years.
Leaving aside my personal contempt at your worldview, who would want to be a part of an organization that didn’t change in 2000 years. The Church inspires a billion people precisely because it changes its message when it realizes it is wrong. It no longer supports the murder and subjugation of native people, because it realized that was wrong. It doesn’t contest political control of Italy with armies of spearmen. it doesn’t attempt to assassinate the Protestant King of England. It doesn’t accept cash as a way to get one’s loved ones out of Purgatory.
If the Church’s message speaks to you and inspires you, then great for you and your fellow believers, but acting as if the Church is infallible and hasn’t changed is Collins-esque craziness. It has changed, should continue to change, and will change, and when it does, it will still inspire people to embrace Jesus’s message of love and hope.
Those of us who don’t believe, however, would really like it if those of you who do with hold off on the outrage directed toward us and direct at the the Church elders, who purposefully hid, sinners within its ranks.
Rather than being angry at Maher for pointing to the American Church’s culpability in molestation, maybe you could help change the Church from the inside?
Probably too much to ask for when the entire focus of Darleen, Danny, Karl, JD, Enoch, etc is Manichean. I’m on the good team and Bill Maher is BAAADDD. Won’t revitalize the Church’s image, but it will still have the 40 odd kooks that make up PW.

smithers – Mr. Burns is looking for you.
nishidiot – Aren’t you the least bit embarassed?
Why is it that our trolls read for comprehension only slightly better than a box of rocks on the short bus?
