Tech Question

Anybody know how to capture video from a DVD? I’m trying to break some instructionals into clips, but I have no idea how to get the video into the editing software. I’m using a Mac Dual G5 and Final Cut Express HD.

If you can’t just save clips from the media player, it’s probably DRMed to prevent that.

Play it back on a stand-alone DVD player with baseband (yellow jack) or — arrrrgh, the name won’t come, the one with the stupid 4-pin DIN connector — and capture that on your video in to the computer. The analog step throws away the crap, and you can save the video in the format you like. It does produce losses, but they shouldn’t be noticeable, especially if the goal is typical computer-video quality.

    Regards,
    Ric

This does the decrypting. This will convert the vob files into avis or mpegs etc.

Not sure about how Mac friendly all that is.

I’ve had good luck with Handbrake on a Mac, using it to rip to divx .avi for my little set-top player to play later. Find it here: http://handbrake.fr/

It rips to other formats, as well, one of which should be suitable for the editing software to mess with.

This might be worth a look as well.

Thanks, guys. But you really need to walk me through this. If I’m using the computer drive, what would the process be, step by step?

If I’m using a remote player, how do I get it into the computer, exactly? My box doesn’t have an SVID connector — just a bunch of US and firewire connections. Hell, I’m not even seeing a place for a stereo pin, at least, not on the desktop unit.

Downloading that Handbrake thingy now, by the way.

Ok. The deal with Handbrake is that it’s supposed to do the decrypting as well as the converting but my understanding is that the decrypting part is not very reliable. But it’s excellent for working with and converting the decrypted files once they’re on your drive.

It looks though like DVD Fab is not Mac-friendly though, so maybe give handbrake a shot at the decrypting first.

Oh. And also I just know the theory. I have a guy what does this for me. I’m building a new machine that can handle it, but that’s a ways off yet.

Yeah, the DVDFab ain’t made for Mac. Any others you know of that are?

I’m running Handbrake now. I have no idea what it is doing.

The basic idea is you put the DVD into your DVD drive and then run Handbrake and it should be sorta easy after that. If you don’t have a DVD drive then you can get an external DVD drive for not a lot I think. (Unfortunately a lot my tech skills usually involve throwing money at the problem until it’s solved.)

There’s a device that goes in between your video source and the computer that has inputs for normal video and Firewire or USB 2.0 as an output.

Like these, say. I haven’t looked into this for a while though; no idea how good they are.

Does anyone know if Aimersoft Mac DVD Converter Suite is any good?

Here is my easy to follow, never fail 3 step plan.

    1. Load DVD into DVD drive
    2.
    5. Enjoy perfectly editted video clips.

    Or “edited”, I’m not sure.

Yeah, hf. I put it in and let it go, and then I told it .avi. It’s doing stuff now that involves status bars. I’m hoping I didn’t just pull a David Lightman .

Thanks JAA. That looks like something I should have.

Oddly enough, there was an entry in the referrer log last week searching for Prof. Falken to play a game of chess. Yes, Really.

JohnAnnArbor, my thanks as well. I’d lost the link to those. I don’t know how the current models work (in terms of quality) but the earlier versions were excellent.

Doom9.net is the place to go for your DVD backup needs, including what you’re doing. The main part of the site is mainly focused on Windows software, but the forums extend into the other OSes.

Use your internal drive– using the external player will reduce the quality.

Once you’ve got the DVD ripped (that is, decrypted and copied), you might also expand your research to videohelp.org, which has more fora and software (again, windows-centric) which concentrates on conversion, editing, etc.

You’re going to find yourself getting an education on audio and video codecs, container files, and so on. Good luck!

Thanks, all. Handbrake seemed to turn the file into an .avi file for me. Now I’m going to take it into an editing software and try to break it down into clips.

Of course, I’m not sure Final Cut Express has titling capabilities, so I’ll have to then take into another program to add the copyright and URL.

Not how I thought I’d be spending my night.

Ironically, about ten years ago I was able to do something like this on my Windows laptop using a PCI card that took in VHS video and converted it to digital vid. I then burned it to a CD-ROM (for my now wife’s senior project on the various film adaptations of MacBeth). But ten years is a long time. And trust me, many brain cells have been pruned to bring you this next decade version of Jeff.

the shareware product you might need is called “Mac the Ripper”. It will decrypt just about any DVD. Put the DVD in your 12″ Powerbooks DVD drive. Run MtR on it. Then use Handbreak to convert from VOBs to a digital form. Then you could even use iMovie to edit it.
