So I’m taking a break from watching a doubly disappointing men’s college basketball playoff game. One, my perennial dream of having an all-ACC Final Four is once again not to be. And two, my Tarheels have forgotten that manos de piedra is a good thing only in boxing, not hoops.
So while the Jayhawks are buffing the court to a high glossy sheen with the ‘Heels, let’s have a trivia question. This is the 25th anniversary of the 1983 Final Four. What, in this racially charged presidential election year, is noteworthy about that long-ago matchup?
It was the first Final Four in which the starting five players for all four teams–Georgia, North Carolina State, Houston, and Louisville–were all African-Americans. And as one who was there I can tell you: I never knew this until decades later, when someone pointed it out, so normal had integration become by that time. And there was no arguing with the magic of that finish.  sigh… Now, back to the mugging on TV…

I do not like Bill Self. Worse person than timmah and IJS. Memphis just had too many horses. Howland is a class guy. That Sam Ryan reporter is hawt.

Care to dissect the frog and explain that to me? You can email me, to avoid publicly bruising my pop-culture pride.

Sam Ryan is hawt. I had not seen her before today, which I mention, in case those who had not seen her were thinking JD and I were admiring some dude. NTTAWWT.

Oh. No shame at all. It’s Dragon Ball Z. Goku is a Saiyan. Except when he’s blond like in the pic then he’s a Super Saiyan. You might will get to know him better cause 20th may have the movie out next year.

Karl – Great minds, and all. Plus, I can always count on you for the great link-fu.

- Hmmmm…. she looks like a young Sandra Bullock, assuming Sandra was ever actually young. I can’t confirm that.
- Memphis/UCLA – Todays game bore witness to the dropoff in competitiveness on the Left coast. UCLA looked like a fair College team, with Love playing fairly well, but short of his advanced billing by a big degree. Memphis looked like a training camp NBA pickup team, and had to put on the brakes a bit to avoid embarrassing the West team even worse. Bolo contendro.
Kansas/UNC. UNC, against its coaches specific wishes, decided it would be a great time to try out their new “don’t run, and don’t gun” kistless offense, getting caught in the first half at the wrong end of the court where the ball wasn’t, so badly, that at times it looked like there were two different half-court games in progress. Kansas got so far ahead at one pont, they decided to take a break, but luckily for them UNC wore itself out catching up to within 6 points, until Kansas mercifully put it away with 4+ minutes left to play.
- Promises to be an interesting finale between to semi-pro teams.
