In the aftermath of Obama’s Iowa derailing of Hillary!s “inevitability”, the columns of fawning, giddy, puff pieces on Obama rival similar so-called “news” pieces when BJ Clinton was working the primary circuit. “Stunning”, “magic”, “magnetism”, words found more often in review blurbs on film ads, pepper reporters’ stories along with allusions to JFK and MLK. Obama’s Iowa victory has turned into an extended New Year’s celebration.
However, never let it be said that the Left can just enjoy the celebratory moments without finding an opportunity to turn it into a salacious hatefest. Look no further than HuffPo’s frontpage and J. Palermo’s unctuous fantasy Barak Obama, RFK and Blackwater
It took forty years but perhaps today with Barack Obama we are seeing the continuation of the project that Robert Kennedy started in 1968.
In 1968, when Kennedy was gaining momentum and piling up primary victories it looked as though he would win the presidential nomination. But before he could be safely ensconced inside “the bubble” of 24-hour federal protection he was assassinated. And his progressive challenge to the war in Vietnam and to poverty at home was stopped in its tracks.
In 2008, Obama is gaining momentum, and hopefully people inside his organization are cognizant of the fact that he constitutes a very real threat to the likes of Blackwater, Dyncorps, Halliburton, and the hundreds of other private companies currently profiteering from the Iraq occupation.
Blackwater, that reactionary private mercenary outfit headed by the right-wing Christian nationalist Erik Prince stands to lose big time with an Obama presidency. [...]
Under an Obama Administration Blackwater would no doubt be cut down to size along with Bush’s other crony capitalist entities. The Blackwater Boys no doubt have close friends and ideological soul mates deep inside the federal security services. [...]
Let’s hope that the Blackwater elements can be thoroughly flushed out of the federal security services. Let’s also hope that the Secret Service does a better job protecting Obama in the coming election year than Pakistan’s ISI did in protecting Benazir Bhutto who didn’t live to see election day. [...]
What must be done with Blackwater is what President John F. Kennedy said he wanted to do with the CIA following the Bay of Pigs disaster: Tear it up into a thousand pieces and scatter it to the wind. [...]
Bush gave Blackwater and companies like it a free ride on the government’s dime and they no doubt want the gravy train to continue. Obama promises to apply the brakes. He therefore has some well-armed and lethally trained enemies that stand to lose their livelihoods if he follows through on his promise to end the Iraq occupation.
Palermo plays out this Eeeevil Xtianist Rightist assassination porn fantasy hoping that readers have little grasp of history. For instance, RFK was not assassinated because he was against the Vietnam war. Or that JFK actually said made the statement about the CIA as Palermo asserts when in reality the post-Bay-of-Pigs years found JFK  improving the CIA, expanding their covert actions in places like Latin America and Laos while publicly expressing his gratitude and admiration of the agency.
The personal is the political, and no event — primary win or funeral — should escape a chance to demonize the non-Left.

I guess my point is that historically speaking we’re kind of overdue for this sort of thing so maybe thinking about it is better than not thinking about it.

I think so too. In the present case the guy is just using the assassination fantasy as a hook for his Blackwater rant, but my sense is that post-assassination for real conspiracy theories would not be the sole province of the left. Something has changed.

Bhutto tried to hire Blackwater for her security, but the Paki government wouldn’t give visas to foreign security contractors. She’d probably still be alive if she’d managed to hire one of the US or Brit companies.
Comment by McGehee on 1/5 @ 2:14 pm #
Actually, I think conspiracy theories after actual assassinations tend to be fairly wide-ranging and independent of the political views of the theorist. The stakes are so high when a powerful person is killed, it would be weird for there not to be a pretty much pervasive sense of possible conspiracy, at least initially.
Forty years after the fact, not so much.

Comment by stace on 1/5 @ 3:08 pm #
What worries me about this crap is that this is the sort of paranoid demagoguery that can actually scare people into doing something crazy. Sara Jane Moore tried to shoot Ford because she thought that the Left was under attack. This is what she said: “The government had declared war on the left. Nixon’s appointment of Ford as vice president and his resignation making Ford president seemed to be a continuing assault on America.”
Comment by ushie on 1/5 @ 3:10 pm #
Now reading (and it’s so long and detailed, will probably still be reading this time next year) Vincent Bugliosi’s Reclaiming History, in which he debunks the HELL out of every conspiracy theory about JFK’s death and “convicts” Oswald completely and totally. I highly recommend it, even though Mr. B is an unrepentant old style liberal.

That shitty little shoestring rent-a-cop outfit — which is all they were just a few years ago — pulled off a marketing masterstroke choosing that name.
I wonder if they did it knowingly. If so, high five. It’s powerful branding.
“Blackwater” just sounds cool stuck in assassination fantasies — which, apparently, no leftist can look at Obama without having. Not that that means anything.
If they were “Strivent Temporary Security Consultancy” or “Captain Bill’s Plastic Badges,” things wouldn’t have turned out nearly so well for them. Their name will be the star of stupid conspiracy stories for centuries to come. It’s genius.

Yeah, funny how the shadow conspiracies and megapowerful corporations and such can completely control every aspect of the country, yet can’t quite manage to censor and/or kill people that speak out against them. Cognitive dissonance from hell going on with these people.

On the original point… what that actually means is that the Foster Squad is clearing their weapons, and scapegoats are being sought in advance.
Hey! conspiracy theories are not anybody’s exclusive property.

stace,
She also ignored the advice she was given from many quarters. Given the threat level against her, it is not unreasonable to say that Bhutto died of stupidity. There may yet be a Darwin award in her future. The Secret Service will definitely do a much better job because ignoring their security related demands is really not an option if you desire their protection.

I’d be tempted to send them back my diploma, except I got it in spite of having had to take classes from professors at least that bad. If it hadn’t been for the two or three decent ones, and one really good one (who was teaching in a field in which he held no degree, advanced or otherwise) I might have dropped out a second time and never gone back.

Hardly. Before our invasion of Iraq, Blackwater had a reputation as a first-tier firearms & tactics training company. Up there with Gunsite, Thunder Ranch, Front Sight, Storm Mountain, etc. They were widely regarded as having the best facilities on the East Coast.
