Roots [Dan Collins]

The adoptees in our midst might be interested in this piece by Scott Glover in the LA Times, depicting his encounter with his birth parents, one of them departed. Excellent piece.

    Food for thought.

    Hmm,

“But I do remember what I took away from the conversation: that my cousins were blood relatives of my parents and I was not, that in some fundamental way they were closer to my parents than I would ever be. I didn’t show it, but I was crushed by this realization.”

He gets that revelation exactly backwards — what greater love than parents adopting? Yes, parents even before the fact, by considered choice, not by chance, nor by hope.

He is to be excused for his misinterpretation, he took a comment to heart by young girl as a young boy, but wasn’t able to bring himself to reinterpret it later in life — which shouldn’t be taken as criticism on my part, as it is still individual and complicated indeed.
