While the expansion of the SCHIP program (aka as nationalized medicine creep) was defeated, Dems are vowing to bring it back.
It seems that the hard-charging Democrats of nine months ago have hit a wall when it comes to Bush’s vetoes. Today’s vote means they will be forced to make concessions, despite a vow from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid yesterday (subscription) that they would not give in on the $35 billion figure for SCHIP expansion.
Just as the also-failed Armenian Genocide bill was a cynical, backdoor attempt to anger Turkey into disallowing the US military to move troop supplies through its territory, so this unconscionable expansion of a program for poor children into a middle-class entitlement is a way for Dems to publicly preen about how they are for teh childrens while the nasty, Simon Legree Rethuglicans …
“I disagreed with the president’s position because he wants to leave out all the children.” Dennis Kucinich*
“We’re holding these members of Congress accountable for standing with President Bush and against our children.” Noah Winer, head of MoveOn.org’s health care campaign.*
“You don’t have money to fund the war or children. But you’re going to spend it to blow up innocent people if we can get enough kids to grow old enough for you to send to Iraq to get their heads blown off for the president’s amusement.” Pete Stark[raving mad]*
“Why does President Bush hate American kids?” Keith Olbermann [child pimp] *
…. WANT TO EAT YOUR CHILDREN!! [cue maniacal laughter]
Good.Lord.

There’s two ways to view these Socialist’s rhetoric:
1. As you allude, they’re knowingly appealing to fear and ignorance;
2. They actually believe this shit.
One concludes they’re either liars or fools. Given their dismal recent respective performances, or both.

I agree that their methods are quite cynical however I believe they are working so far. This has all been a stunt to paint the Reps as war mongers who hate poor kids and the polls show they have won. It isn’t over though. I think the Reps can give their counter proposal and bring themselves political victory yet. Here is how I saw it.

What I’m not feeling is some lady in like Akron running into a neighbor at the supermarket and them having some chit-chat about how wonderful it would be if this SCHIP passed so they could all go on the welfare. Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t get the feeling that people are at all sure that what’s being talked about is for sure going to affect them.
This would require a lot more clarity about eligibility, with the unavoidable assertion that you, yes you, have been deemed unable to care for your children and the government is therefore interested in getting involved in your family’s healthcare.
The Democrats are trying to get around this by highlighting the program as some sort of backstop for catastrophic dirty-hippie-mom-totals-the-minivan circumstances, and less so with respect to discussions of routine healthcare, and I think this undercuts an impression that this program will necessarily benefit any particular family (you).
But what I think this also obscures is that the expansion of this program is designed to buy votes. Plain and simple. Get people invested in Democratic policies, make them dependents, and you get them invested at the ballot box.
But what I’m trying to get at is that the focus on catastrophic situations is abject fear-mongering, and that adds a ginormous element of hypocrisy to the way Democrats are approaching the selling of this program.
Ok - I’m not exactly sure why Judith Miller is listed, but anyhoo.

That is the entire Democratic platform. They buy votes with other peoples money. The only reason they are opposed to the Iraq war is we are spending money on people who can’t vote for them.

All I need to know is that HillaryCare included felonies for doctors and patients alike who didn’t toe the line (or should I say “lines”, because government control will reach into all aspects of healthcare, including the education and “distribution” of our doctors).
How long will it take before the iron hand of the Stalinist’s hijacks any form of personal choice in our healthcare? My guess is about thirty seconds, once they have their hands on the till.
Free health care makes for a satisfying dream, but a reality of Hell. Just how soon do we want to be pulling our own teeth, and taking out our own tonsils?
Ignorant people have such simple problems - and most of them due to the VICIOUSNESS OF THE RIGHT WING!!!!!

hf asks:

The head of the group can get away with it. And the group can, so long as it doesn’t become a “substantial” part of what they do. And this particula group was started by FDR, so no shocker.
The American Cancer Society has a separate 501(c)(4) group which is going all out for SCHIP, btw. Indeed, its current TV ads suggest they are for Hillarycare.
Comment by DrSteve on 10/21 @ 7:17 am #
Hadn’t noticed before, but our SCHIP PSAs here in PA (the ones with the kid narrator walking down the street narrowly avoiding all sorts of mishaps) clearly state that there is no income restriction on the program.
Anyone else seen that ad? They’ve been running it again lately.

But the Munich- based company said“ volume growth will not be pursued at the expense of profitability. In the light of the ongoing weakness of the U.
