Someone was pounding at her front door. It was early in the morning — very early — and it was the kind of heavy pounding that meant someone was either fleeing from — or bringing — trouble.
“It was so hard. I’d never heard anything like it. I thought someone was dying outside.”
She ran to the door, opened it, and then chaos. “People came pouring in. For a second I thought it was a home invasion. It was terrifying. They were yelling and running, into every room in the house. One of the men was in my face, yelling at me over and over and over.”
It was indeed a home invasion, but the people who were pouring in were Wisconsin law-enforcement officers. Armed, uniformed police swarmed into the house. Plainclothes investigators cornered her and her newly awakened family. Soon, state officials were seizing the family’s personal property, including each person’s computer and smartphone, filled with the most intimate family information.
As if the home invasion, the appropriation of private property, and the verbal abuse weren’t enough, next came ominous warnings.
Don’t call your lawyer.
Don’t tell anyone about this raid. Not even your mother, your father, or your closest friends. […]
Yes, Wisconsin, the cradle of the progressive movement and home of the “Wisconsin idea” — the marriage of state governments and state universities to govern through technocratic reform — was giving birth to a new progressive idea, the use of law enforcement as a political instrument, as a weapon to attempt to undo election results, shame opponents, and ruin lives.
Most Americans have never heard of these raids, or of the lengthy criminal investigations of Wisconsin conservatives. For good reason. Bound by comprehensive secrecy orders, conservatives were left to suffer in silence as leaks ruined their reputations, as neighbors, looking through windows and dismayed at the massive police presence, the lights shining down on targets’ homes, wondered, no doubt, What on earth did that family do? This was the on-the-ground reality of the so-called John Doe investigations, expansive and secret criminal proceedings that directly targeted Wisconsin residents because of their relationship to Scott Walker, their support for Act 10, and their advocacy of conservative reform.

There is not enough tar-and-feathers available to adequately take care of the Democrats behind this “process as punishment” legal terrorism used against families for the crime of committing Speaking While Conservative.
Keep in mind, these people are not Islamist terrorists …
When a rubber dinghy carrying around 100 African refugees across the Mediterranean began to sink, a Nigerian Christian prayed for his life in an innocent act that would end in the deaths of 12 fellow migrants.
One of the Muslims on board the rickety craft ordered him to stop, saying: ‘Here, we only pray to Allah.’
When he refused, a violent fight ensued and 12 Christians drowned when they were thrown overboard by the Muslim refugees.

“‘Islamic Intelligence State’ — a caliphate run by an organization that resembled East Germany’s notorious Stasi domestic intelligence agency.” [Darleen Click]
An important article via geoffb. Some excerpts
[W]when the architect of the Islamic State died, he left something behind that he had intended to keep strictly confidential: the blueprint for this state. It is a folder full of handwritten organizational charts, lists and schedules, which describe how a country can be gradually subjugated. SPIEGEL has gained exclusive access to the 31 pages, some consisting of several pages pasted together. They reveal a multilayered composition and directives for action, some already tested and others newly devised for the anarchical situation in Syria’s rebel-held territories. In a sense, the documents are the source code of the most successful terrorist army in recent history.
Until now, much of the information about IS has come from fighters who had defected and data sets from the IS internal administration seized in Baghdad. But none of this offered an explanation for the group’s meteoric rise to prominence, before air strikes in the late summer of 2014 put a stop to its triumphal march.
For the first time, the Haji Bakr documents now make it possible to reach conclusions on how the IS leadership is organized and what role former officials in the government of ex-dictator Saddam Hussein play in it. Above all, however, they show how the takeover in northern Syria was planned, making the group’s later advances into Iraq possible in the first place. In addition, months of research undertaken by SPIEGEL in Syria, as well as other newly discovered records, exclusive to SPIEGEL, show that Haji Bakr’s instructions were carried out meticulously. […]
It was there that the “Lord of the Shadows,” as some called him, sketched out the structure of the Islamic State, all the way down to the local level, compiled lists relating to the gradual infiltration of villages and determined who would oversee whom. Using a ballpoint pen, he drew the chains of command in the security apparatus on stationery. Though presumably a coincidence, the stationery was from the Syrian Defense Ministry and bore the letterhead of the department in charge of accommodations and furniture.
What Bakr put on paper, page by page, with carefully outlined boxes for individual responsibilities, was nothing less than a blueprint for a takeover. It was not a manifesto of faith, but a technically precise plan for an “Islamic Intelligence State” — a caliphate run by an organization that resembled East Germany’s notorious Stasi domestic intelligence agency.
Russia has threatened to target Denmark’s warships with nuclear weapons if the Scandinavian nation becomes a member of Nato’s missile defence shield.
In comments which have been met with anger in Copenhagen, the Russian ambassador to Denmark said a move towards better integration with the Western alliance would make it a “threat to Russia”, and that it would have to accept the consequences.
Mikhail Vanin told the told Jyllands-Posten newspaper: “I do not think that the Danes fully understand the consequences if Denmark joins the US-led missile defence shield. If that happens, Danish warships become targets for Russian nuclear missiles.”
Heck of a job, Barry!
“Sweet Jesus, Vic, now we’re lost!”
“Shortcut, my ass.”
They glared at each other over the hood of the car.
“Where the hell is everyone?”
Even the gathering dusk couldn’t hide the griminess of the town.
Vic noticed her first. She stood across the street, as tattered and dirty as her surroundings, cradling a doll. “Hey! Little girl!”
He crossed to her and kneeled, “Can you tell us …?”
She smiled and leaned in, as if to whisper in Vic’s ear.
And Stacy’s screams echoed down the street as the blood appeared and the little girl fed.
Now, your turn.
Not The Onion:
Stevenson College is apologizing to its students for serving Mexican food during “Intergalactic” night.
In a letter sent out to students, the college apologized for having “a Mexican food buffet,” while also featuring spaceships and aliens. The college received complaints saying the combination was racist because of the association between Mexicans and illegal immigrants.
“We would never want to make a connection between individuals of Latino heritage or undocumented students and “aliens” and I am so sorry that our College Night appeared to do exactly that,” wrote Carolyn Golz who had taken this picture of the activities before the complaints: […]
After receiving complaints, Dr. Golz said that the event “demonstrated a cultural insensitivity on the part of the program planners and, though it was an unintentional mistake, I recognize that this incident caused harm within our community and negatively impacted students.”
As a result, Dr. Golz “will require cultural competence training for Programs staff, in addition to implementing mechanisms for future program planning that will ensure college programs are culturally sensitive and inclusive.”
In the letter, Dr. Golz then assures students that she is “an ally for students of color and, in particular, undocumented students.” Further, she is “committed to ensuring that student life staff receive the training necessary to make sure that this type of incident does not happen again at Stevenson.”
“I am working closing with Donnae Smith, Coordinator for Diversity and Inclusion for Colleges, Housing and Educational Services (CHES) to continue to increase the cultural intelligence (CQ) of our staff,” she continues.
Dr. Golz then encourages students to report “hate” to http://reporthate.ucsc.edu/ to cut down on insensitive events like Intergalactic night.
She concludes her letter, writing, “I care about the individuals in our community and I want everyone to feel respected, included, and affirmed.
Ok, UC Santa Cruz has a reputation, even in California, as a slacker, stoner campus but still …
I want to know who it was that “complained”, because obviously they weren’t beaten enough as a child.
Dr. Golz and fellow travelers have got to go.
We light a memorial candle on Yom HaShoah as a recognition that the souls of the victims are still alive in our hearts and that many entire families were murdered meaning there are none left to mourn for them. We light a memorial candle on Yom HaShoah to remember never to forget.
This year’s commemoration is particularly relevant as one recent report showed anti-Semitic violence increased by 40% during the past year, the President of the United States has determined that certain areas of Jerusalem must be Judenrein even if Jewish citizens buy homes from Arab citizens. This year the UN continued to make Israel their public whipping boy, and when Israel defend itself against terrorists who used their own people as human shields, it was Israel who was criticized. This year an anti-Semite like Al Sharpton can meet with Presidents and mayors, and the U.S. can attempt a deal with a rogue regime, a deal that at best allows them to remain on the precipice of the ultimate weapon which it intends to use to commit another Holocaust. And when the Prime Minister of the Jewish State comes to the U.S. in an attempt to prevent a nuclear holocaust, he is subject to ad hominem attacks by the Obama administration and outright anti-Semitism by the Congressional Black Caucus. […]
The Holocaust is unique in its volume and horrors and is a singular event in world history, yes there are other genocides and other horrors even to the Jews. But generally the genocide is waged to suppress a group, to take their territory, or some economic reason like to enslave a people. This was different the Jews had no territory, an held relatively little power. In the Shoah Jews were taken from all over Europe just to be killed. And friendly supposedly civilized leaders like Franklyn Roosevelt and Winston Churchill sentence hundreds of thousands to death because they didn’t want more Jews in their country.
This is what people don’t understand about the Shoah and Israel. Israel wasn’t created because of some compensation for the Holocaust, Israel was always the home of the Jews. Just because we didn’t run the land, Jews have lived there since Joshua and his band of Israelites marched around Jericho for seven straight days, sounded their shofars and made the walls come tumbling down.
The Jewish land became a Jewish state for the first time in almost 2,000 years because the lesson of the Holocaust was that it was too dangerous for the Jewish people to continue to be homeless and powerless. Or in the words of Elie Weisel we learned to trust our enemy’s threats more than our friends promises.
